Principles Critique

Critique of:

Art Vocabulary and Craftsmanship	I used a short depth of field for this shot and I cropped it to use rule of thirds. The flower had just been in the center, so I cropped it to make it more interesting
Elements ·       Color ·       Line ·       Shape ·       Texture ·       Form ·       Value ·      Space	The purple pops against the monotone of the bench and contrasts well with the green of the bushes behind it. The line from the bench helps lead the eye to the flower. I really like the texture of the flower and the bench together. The flower against the bench and bushes adds variety as well as the different pebbles in the bench. The short depth of field adds emphasis to the flower.

Conceptual Skill	I really wanted to show the simplicity of the color contrast with this image. Grey and purple are two of my favorite colors to put together and this was a nice way to show them off.
Critique	I love this picture. I was just walking around when I saw that someone had left the flower on the bench. I added a vignette in Photoshop to help draw the eye in to the flower and add a pop of light to the center.

Art Vocabulary and Craftsmanship	I used a short depth of field. I wish I had used rule of thirds to add some variety to the image.

The lines lead to the clover and beyond it, adding depth. The repeating patterns of the petals balance the image, but the missing pieces add variety. I like the texture of the wood against the texture of the petals because you can see the roughness of the veins in the petals rather than the smoothness that you would expect.

Conceptual Skill	I wanted to show the balance of the four leaf clover because they are so rare. I liked the color and texture of the wood compared to it.
Critique	I liked this picture because of the brightness of the green and the varying shades of it.

Dramatic Lighting Film Critique

 

Art Vocabulary and Craftsmanship	It had a short depth of field and dramatic lighting with the light coming in from the window. Rachael’s face is dominant using rule of thirds.

I really like the contrast between the shadows and highlights on her face. I like the simplicity of the picture because it draws more attention to her face. The lack of distractions adds emphasis. I wish I had burned in the edges of the picture because they are slightly distracting.

Conceptual Skill	I wanted to capture the way the light was hitting her eye. By dodging it in in the dark room, I was able to get the bottom of her eye so that it was bright, but not over exposed.
Critique	I really like this picture, it’s a good profile and uses highlights and shadows to add texture and dimension to her face.

Splash of Red Critique

Art Vocabulary and Craftsmanship	Describe the technique applied – also describe dodging and burning; depth of field, etc. I used a short depth of field and dodged in the edges of the picture to give more attention to the flowers. I didn't have to do much since the red flower naturally draws the eye in.

The red flower draws the eye in. I wish the line in the upper right wasn't there because it is distracting from the flowers and is a harsh line.The rough texture of the bench under the smooth petals is a nice contrast. The repeating pattern of the flower leads the eye around all the flowers, they add unity to the image. The red adds emphasis to the image.

Conceptual Skill	Interpret: What is the photographer’s intent?  Does it convey an idea or message? Is there a mood? I love the old feel of flowers on benches. Whenever I can, I like taking pictures of the small things in life because they can convey more to us than the bigger things sometimes.Azaleas are also my favorite flowering bush in the late spring.
Critique	Judge: evaluate the success of this piece. I really like this picture because of the way the flowers work together and the way the petals don't intersect the line in the corner.

The bright white of the statue is made brighter by the dark shadows around it. The smooth marble and the light make the fold in the clothes more pronounced. The wall behind her gives a sense of how tall the statue was. The ripples in her skirt show and the fact that is was a little out of focus give a sense of the movement of women into a more equal role in society.

Conceptual Skill	Interpret: What is the photographer’s intent?  Does it convey an idea or message? Is there a mood? This was the first female statue portrayed in the Capitol. I wanted to use the dim lighting in the room to capture the feeling of a woman emerging from the dark shadows of the pre-feminist movement era.
Critique	Judge: evaluate the success of this piece. I think I was able to capture the brightness of the statue by underexposing. I wish it had been a little more in focus, but overall I think It was composed well and the lights and darks contrast well.

Spring Critique

The azaleas are burned in well, but I should have burned the bench and smaller flowers in more. The edges are bright and distract from the center of interest.

The repeating shape of the azaleas contrast with the repeating shapes of the smaller flowers. The smooth texture of the flowers contrasts  with the rough texture of the bench. The stems on the small flowers lead the eye to the azaleas. The harsh line of the back of the bench is distracting, I wish I had moved the camera a little lower to eliminate it. The bigger proportion of the azaleas gives a better sense of how small the little flowers are. The  picture is heavily balanced on the bottom half. The two different kinds of flowers add variety to the image.

I wanted to arrange the flowers in a way that would show the different textures and sizes between them. Adding the small flower in with the azaleas gave a better sense of the differences.
Critique	Judge: evaluate the success of this piece. I think I was able to capture the differences fairly well. I wish the small flower in front  of the azaleas didn't intersect with them.

I probably should have burned in the branches because all the lines are a little distracting.

The pink in the blossom draws your eye because it is the only pink in the picture. I wish the one branch in the background didn’t intersect with the blossoms. I also wish the two blossoms didn’t intersect because it takes away from the depth of the picture. The texture from the new leaves contrasts with the smooth petals of the blossom. The repeating shapes of the blossoms add harmony, but the leaves and branches add variety.

Conceptual Skill	Interpret: What is the photographer’s intent?  Does it convey an idea or message? Is there a mood? It shows the fresh start that comes with Spring. The new blossom with the budding leaves symbolize new life and the ability to start over in the Spring.
Critique	Judge: evaluate the success of this piece. I feel like there is too much of the branches in the picture, it’s fairly distracting. They take away from the focus on the blossoms. The color and light on the blossoms are good.
